December Show

I am currently preparing for a show at New Seasons here in Beaverton. This will be the last show they will have before turning the gallery over to student artists only.

I wanted to show a variety of images and no necessarily images that all went together; this is a great opportunity to showcase the variety of images that I have as well as show both B/W and color. There is room enough for about 15 images but I plan on printing 2 36x12 inch images for the center of the space and allow the others to mingle with their matching color / theme.

Here is a current selection of what might go up -

The Evergreen State College 'Art of Living' auction

I am very happy that Evergreen contacted me about donating a piece to their art auction. The auction is used to raise funds for student scholarships and the Evergreen Gallery. I have to thank Tom Anderson in Olympia Washington for suggesting my work. The greatest reward for me is having people enjoy my work and have some connection to it.

I decided to donate the Ho' Okipa point photo for a variety of reasons. One, the idea is to raise as much money as possible and this image seems, based on the feedback, something many people like. Also, I see this image as a turning point for me in that I spent much time waiting, framing and thinking about this image before I clicked the shutter - what? it isn't always random?

Benefit for Brad

I'm trying to raise money for a friend's family. He is in the ICU at OHSU and is fighting. I'm asking $50.00 dollars for a 21" x 6 1/4" gallery quality matte print (190gsm). I'll also be doing a limited # of 48" wide prints for special order - these are $150.00. All money will go to Brad's family.

Friends. If we are lucky, we have at least 1 good friend, if we're rich - we have many.

Hong and I spent almost 3 hours today with our friend Brad Eakman. It was strange to have a conversation with him that didn't take place on a tennis court, at our house, over a beer; anywhere but in a hospital ICU unit. 3 weeks ago Brad suffered a major series of heart attacks and heart failure and is still fighting an uphill battle for himself and his family. Brad is and always will be the guy that was always available at the last minute to play - would show up to watch when you were playing and to cheer you on. The first to text you to ask how it was going if he knew there was something challenging going on.

I took this photograph with Hong and a couple of good friends 2 weekends ago. I spent so much of that weekend thinking of Brad I think this is a perfect image for him. There is such an incredible deep beauty and timelessness to the whole area. Whole areas are reclaiming the land and forest are growing again.

Mount Saint Helens

After a frustrating morning of low clouds, mist and foggy weather we decided to watch the movie they offered. At the end of the film, the curtains behind the screen opened to a sheet of pure white fog; normally a stunning view of the crater and mountain. When we left the theatre there was a slight and hardly noticeable warmth to the mist. Within a few mintues, the sun was visible through the mist - but only as a bright yellow circle; diffused. Then, within a few more minutes, the clouds lifted and the warmth was everywhere. I had lugged my gigapan panoramic head with me so I ran back to the car, grabbed my gear and ran back up to the viewer point. A stunning view of a stunning landscape.

Developing into it

I've been using the Gigapan tripod head a ton recently. I love it for the high resolution images I can capture, then convert to TIF. It does a fairly good job of creating flattened centers without considerable distortion on the edges. It is also built like a brick - and heavy as one. I wonder what oddity of design and engineering could make a similar head, but much smaller and still maintain the strength.

These are various samples of images I'm working on for a project around Washington County Oregon. I'm very interested in the development that is taking place around the area. The Urban Growth Boundary that exists here in the greater Portland (and has since the 1970's)area allows for wonderful green spaces, open spaces and pristine farm country all within biking distance. I do believe this is a sample of how to integrate with the natural surroundings.

Pete and Kristi's Wedding, Ardiri Winery June

I just finished editing down the images from last weeks wedding for Pete and Kristi. They wanted mainly candid images with a few 'formal' shots (got to get out my lights). Overall I'm happy considering the size of the wedding (55 people) and the very loose and fluid arrangement. Even though I'm not a huge fan of shooting weddings, if the right people ask and they want more informal images - it isn't that bad.
